ABOUT
Faithwalking . . . building a community of transformational leaders
Faithwalking is creating a community of disciples of Jesus who are catalysts, mobilizing Christians to become the functioning Body of Christ in their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces and 3rd places:
•To serve the poor, the marginalized, and those in need
•To work to restore individuals, social systems, communities and nations to God's design.
Faithwalking is the leadership development arm of Mission Houston. We believe that the world has changed so much - and the Church in our culture has changed so little - that on both fronts transformation is needed. We are loosing the cities of our country at supersonic speeds. Congregational membership and involvement is rapidly declining, and our ability to impact the culture is compromised in so many places. It is no longer enough for the Kingdom of God to make progress. We must seek the transformational advance of the Kingdom in our cities. For our cities to be transformed, those who profess to follow Christ must also be transformed. In fact, the Faithwalking journey is built on the belief that personal transformation precedes the transformation of our families, neighborhoods, and congregations and workplaces.
It is our belief that the transformation journey begins when participants explore the call to radical obedience – a call to the kind of discipleship that follows Jesus – not just in the ways that are comfortable and culturally acceptable – but in all the ways that he, as the first in the line of restored humanity calls, us to live. We believe that Jesus calls us to be fully human and that western culture offers a view of humanity that is mind numbing and destructive. So in the Faithwalking 101 retreat, we assert that missional living is the apex of what it means to be fully human – fully alive. We explore radical obedience and begin to tell God and a small group of trusted people about those places where we are living outside of Jesus’ design for being on mission.
We propose a very different way of thinking about obedience. Usually we hear obedience from a moral perspective. At the Faithwalking 101 retreat, we explore obedience from the lens of a missional life. What does it mean for each participant to be on mission with God in the world where he/she spends most of each day? In answer to that question, we equip participants to join in the creation of “Missional Communities.”
A Missional Community is a small group of people who work to imbed the functioning Body of Christ in the place that they spend most of their waking hours so that the Kingdom of God can be measurably advanced. Faithwalkers are challenged, motivated, supported and held accountable for serving as catalyst for mobilizing believers to function as the living Body of Christ in the places where they spend most of their day.
For most Christ-followers this is a brand new way of thinking. It challenges the compartmentalized way that most of us live. We keep work in one compartment and faith and/or ministry in another. In order to break down that compartmentalization, personal transformation is required. Most of the obstacles to removing that compartmentalization are within us and require that we identify and allow God’s Spirit to empower us to overcome those obstacles. This requires personal courage that is uncommon in today’s world.
The Faithwalking journey begins with an intensive three-day weekend retreat. Led by men and women who have already engaged the Faithwalking journey, this retreat sets the context for deep encounters with God that feed the personal journey of transformation. In the retreat participants:
•Hear several presentations about missional living;
•Spend time in solitude following each presentation, listening for God’s voice;
•Share their experience in a small group that is facilitated by a someone who is farther along in the Faithwalking journey.
