God is doing something extraordinary in Houston. He is speaking into existence a conversation - a call to action - about missional living. Mission Houston’s AT THE CORNER OF…CONFERENCE is our effort to share what we sense God is speaking to us about this topic and to invite others to share in what they are seeing and hearing. It’s our hope that the conference will result in a collective discernment of how we keep joining Him in what He is doing – moving His agenda for the Greater Houston Area ahead.
Mission Houston believes that human beings are designed to live missional lives without the compartmentalization that is currently dominant in the Christian culture. A missional life has the most impact when missional leaders are developed and then mobilized together in small groups to steward the common good in homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces.
We develop missional leaders in three areas:
1.Radical Obedience - Resigned and cynical, most Christians have tried, worked hard and decided that missional living is not possible – that radical obedience is just for people who become missionaries or for private sector leaders who quit their jobs and start a non-profit ministry. And yet, there is a deep longing in each of us for personal transformation that actually helps us discover and live out of our God-given design in the places that we live and work. To get there, we believe it is essential to create a safe environment where you can talk authentically about the places where you are stuck or stopped. Through our Faithwalking ministry God is using us to create such a safe, authentic space. In this space it is possible to develop habits of radical obedience that give us the life Jesus intended. In this space it is possible to tell the truth about ourselves and root out the things that keep us from missional living.
2.Reflective Living - For many of us, life with God has been a quiet time, a program, a book to read, an outline to follow or a specific amount of time in prayer. But it is when we learn to practice the ancient spiritual disciplines and really practice them – not like a kid dressed up to go to Sunday School but - in such an authentic way that we bring all of who we are to all of what we know about God. This is not some “checklist” religion that earns us points with God. It is a life – like a branch to a vine – that increases the likelihood that we’ll truly experience God’s power for missional living.
3.Missional Community- For years we have been taught that the Sacred and the Secular are completely different and separate aspects of our lives. But, that isn’t the way Jesus taught us to live. A TRUE missional community is committed to measurably embedding the Kingdom of God into a home, neighborhood or workplace - the place where one spends most of his/her day.
Please join us AT THE CORNER OF…CONFERENCE. We want to offer an opportunity for the leaders in this city to hear what God is saying to us. We also want to learn about, participate in, and see what God is doing in others. We want to talk about how we move ahead with God individually and collectively. Through our time with speakers MARK LABBERTON and CHRIS WEBB, as well as some great dialogue with missional leaders, thinkers and practitioners in our city, we hope to stir up a conversation that really changes life here for The Good.
Come and see the possibilities in these three areas and how they might impact your view of the corner you’re living on. It might seem radical. It might seem ridiculous. But, something is stirring in you and you sense you aren’t being called to the same old faith, full of “programs” and “10 Steps to…” You’re called to THE CORNER OF somewhere and something…and we can promise you, it probably isn’t the same old religious ‘hood you’ve often found yourself in.
