Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What is the cost of the Faithwalking 101 Retreat?
A: $300 which includes all meals, material, and tuition. Some scholarships are available, based on need. All participants must pay at least $75 of their own costs. To apply contact Jim Herrington at jim@missionhouston.org.
Q: How do I register?
A: Go to the Mission Houston web site (http://www.missionhouston.org/Mission_Houston/FWAbout_Registration.html). Complete the online application. Your registration is not complete until you send a $75 non-refundable deposit to Mission Houston at P.O. Box 131074, Houston, TX 77219. The retreat is limited to 18 participants (and it is likely to fill up). You will be notified when your registration has been received and processed.
Q: What is the registration deadline?
A: The online registration form must be completed and deposit postmarked by January 5, 2010 - 30 days in advance of the start date of the retreat.
Q: Why do I have to spend the night?
A: There is a design to the process that the retreat leaders have carefully thought out and prayed through. The retreat is an intense weekend, and the informal times (in the evening after the sessions are over and in the early morning as you are sharing breakfast and preparing for the day) are essential to the overall process. Please do not register unless you can participate in the entire retreat - starting at 9am on Friday and ending no later than 3 pm on Sunday
Q. Is there anything I can do in advance to prepare for the weekend?
A: We believe that prayer is the most powerful tool available in the journey of personal and community transformation. Begin to prepare your heart by asking God to speak to you in the deepest part of your spirit during the weekend. Reflect on a place in your life where things are not working - or are not working to the degree that you believe God wants them to. Where are you stuck or stopped? Begin to ask God to bring revelation to you about these areas while you are at the retreat. When you register you will be asked to submit the names and email contact info of three people who will intercede for you while you attend the retreat. The Faithwalking Team will communicate with them throughout the weekend, asking them to pray for specific things that you will be asked to consider, embrace and implement.
Q: Who created the Faithwalking experience?
A: Faithwalking is a ministry of Mission Houston. For more than fifteen years a group of Houston area pastors and leaders from the private sector have been seeking to answer the question, based on Jesus’ command to “go, and make disciples …,” What is a disciple of Jesus and how do you make one?. Born from the urgency of nearly 60 years of declining influence of the Church in our culture, Faithwalking was established and has been tested in a variety of ways over these past fifteen years. Jim Herrington, Steve Capper, and Trisha Taylor are the “permanent staff” facilitators who have been capturing and writing down the learning that has come from the Faithwalking community, but a host of people have contributed to the learning incorporated in creating this experience.
Q: What will the weekend be like?
A: An experienced team of two to three leadership team members, trained and equipped by the Mission Houston staff, will make six presentations throughout the weekend. These presentations are designed to examine, challenge and/or confront the foundational beliefs and practices of Christian discipleship. Following each presentation, participants will spend time in solitude with assignments to guide their personal reflection and in listening for the voice of God. They will then come back to a small group to process what they have experienced. Small group sessions are generally followed by large group conversations which the leadership team facilitates.
Q: How is Faithwalking different than other weekend discipleship retreats I go on?
A: Our goal for you is not simply that you will be spiritually enriched. In addition to the information you hear and experiences you have in the retreat, we hold the firm hope that you will make a new commitment to living the whole of your life “on mission,” and that you will launch or join a “missional community” that is serving the poor, the disenfranchised, and the oppressed. For those who go to our next level of Faithwalking training, you will receive a personal discipleship coach whose primary role is to keep you in action around your on-going personal transformation journey.
Q: What is the relationship between Mission Houston and local congregations?
A: Mission Houston believes that local congregations are pivotal in God’s plan for His Kingdom advance in any community. We believe in and are committed to the local congregation. Some who come to us are frustrated and disillusioned with the local congregation. We equip them to lead a missional life in the places where they live and work, and we strongly urge them to be deeply connected to a local congregation. We are convinced that the core values of the leadership of local congregations share this desire to make and deploy effective disciples of Jesus Christ.
