Mission Houston, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, connects, unites and mobilizes the Body of Christ to pray and work for the spiritual and social transformation and revitalization of greater Houston and its communities

THE INITIATIVE

The Whole & Healthy Children Initiative is a ten-year commitment by volunteers from congregations and the private and public sectors to adopt local public elementary schools with high percentages of at-risk students. The immediate goal is to provide students and staff in these schools with opportunities for relationships with caring adults from the community who can enhance the educational offerings and environments of the schools. The proof of our caring will be expressed in four ways, what we call the “4 M’s”:

  1. Mentoring: up to 100 at-risk students in each adopted school will be mentored by a trained adult who spends one hour a week with them each week for an entire school year;

  2. Mobilized Prayer: 100 Christians will pray every week by name for the students, their families, teachers, administrators and the mentors in each adopted school;

  3. Makeovers: volunteers in the community will complete an annual aesthetic improvement project for each adopted school every year;

  4. Money: volunteers and business/corporations in the community will raise $10,000 (or $10,000 of in-kind gifts) each year to supplement each adopted school’s educational programs.

The Whole & Healthy Children Initiative is an extension of Mission Houston’s leadership over the past decade in the areas of personal and community transformation. The Initiative applies principles of transformation in a holistic approach that address the systemic needs of the students and the schools.  Mission Houston is committed to changing the lives of a generation of children, and to equipping change-agent mentors who are changed people themselves.
