Nehemiah Award: Honoring those who rebuild for God.
March 05, 2008
At the March 5 - Mission Houston briefing/fundraiser banquet the inaugural Nehemiah Award for 2008 was presented. This award will be given annually to an individual who has made substantial contributions that have inspired and instructed the Body of Christ in Greater Houston's community transformation movement.
Why name an award after Nehemiah?
The book of Nehemiah shows us a man who was arguably the consummate community transformation leader.
~ He was a man who refused to ignore the brokenness and vulnerability of the city of Jerusalem, and the damage being done to the emotional, spiritual and physical well being of its citizens.
~ When he looked upon the ruins of Jerusalem, his own heart broke, and he entered into a period of sustained, intense intercession.
~ Nehemiah wasn't what you'd call "a mover and shaker" by position or notoriety. He was simply a man with a passion for God, and great compassionate love for God's people and purposes.
~ It was from his time of prayer that he discerned a call to sacrifice his own comforts and engage in re-building the city and restoring its inhabitants.
~ Nehemiah offered a strategic plan action for healing the infrastructure and the people.
~ It was a plan that required the people of Israel to overcome their differences and distinctives in order to work together.
~ Nehemiah exercised courageous risk-filled faith and radical obedience. In spite of orchestrated opposition to the rebuilding of the walls of the city, Nehemiah forged ahead as a persevering leader.
The inaugural Nehemiah Award for 2008 was presented to Carol Lumpkin in honor and memory of the late Dr. Walter Lumpkin, one of greater Houston's community transformation "heroes" and pioneers.
