Greater Houston: Our Mission Field

The Present

Houston has more Evangelical congregations per capita than any city in the United States

Houston is oftentimes referred to as the “Megachurch Capital of the United States”

The population in the city of Houston is over 2.1 million. The population in the Greater Houston metropolitan area is over 5.1 million.

Every year, a declining number of Houstonians claim to be followers of Jesus Christ.

The Future

70 percent of the population in Harris County 60 years old and older is Anglo; more than 70 percent of the population in Harris County younger than 30 is non-Anglo.

Houston is home to more than 300 people groups. The Houston population speaks at least 209 different languages and hails from at least 139 different countries around the world.

The Current Reality

There is 1 Church in the city of Houston with over 4,000 different congregational expressions of the Christian faith.

There are a number of real challenges that the Church needs to face in a growing city where cultural diversity and “church culture” attempt to isolate members of the Body.

No matter how big congregations in Houston become, there is a real and recurring need to reach the city that requires ALL the Body of Christ to work together. This effort cannot be accomplished by one congregation, one denomination or one people group by itself.

There are diverse gifts and abundant resources present within the Body of Christ in Houston which have been given to equip us and enable the Church to reach and help prosper the city and community where it lives.

Mission Houston has segmented the Greater Houston metropolitan area into 45 communities that we call CSAs (Community Service Areas) based on geographic and societal traits. This division into communities will allow us to be more effective and strategic in addressing these current realities today and in the future by:

Connecting the Body of Christ across denominations and across people groups creating a network where gifts and resources can be shared.

Sharing vision to break and dispel mental models that have served to divide the Body of Christ, and to nurture Christ-centered mental models in the Body of Christ to unify the Body of Christ

Resource teams of renewed believers who serve as agents of change to transform their congregations and community within their CSA
